Where we hike

Your hills. Our home.

We're not a London brand with a map. Our founders have spent over two decades each on these routes. Every meeting point is chosen for people travelling from Manchester, Liverpool, Chester, Preston and the wider North West — most walks start within two hours of the M60.

The Lake District

Our second home. Gentle first fells to full mountain rounds, with wild swims in Rydal, Buttermere and hidden ghylls when conditions allow. Winter skills days from December.

Catbells · Loughrigg · Helvellyn via Striding Edge · Scafell Pike · The Langdale Pikes · Haystacks

Eryri · North Wales

Yr Wyddfa away from the queues, scrambles on the Glyderau for those ready, and quiet Cadair Idris days. Retreat weekends based around Betws-y-Coed and Llanberis.

Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) · Glyder Fawr · Tryfan · Cadair Idris · Moel Siabod · Aber Falls

Closer to home

Midweek and evening walks for when you need the hills but only have half a day. Perfect first steps before your first Lakes weekend.

Rivington & Winter Hill · West Pennine Moors · Delamere Forest · The Clwydians · Formby & Crosby coast

Walk levels

Know before you go

Every walk is graded so you always know what you're signing up for. No guesswork, no being left behind.

Level 1 · Leída

Find the way. Live it. 3–5 miles, gentle paths, low fells. Ideal first walk. Wellbeing pace with plenty of stops.

Level 2 · Arda

Built by effort. 5–8 miles with real ascent — think Catbells or Loughrigg. Regular walkers and fit beginners.

Level 3 · Skara

Beyond the known. 8–12 miles, big summits like Yr Wyddfa or Helvellyn. Good fitness needed; we build you up to these.

Level 4 · Fors

Push further. Big rounds, scrambles, trail-running intros. Past your limits, safely — earned, not given.

Experiences

Choose your day out

Everything we run is built around the same idea: the outdoors makes you calmer, stronger and more connected — especially with the right people around you.

Guided Hikes

Led routes across the Lakes, Eryri and the North West for every level. Route planning, safety kit and navigation handled — you just turn up and walk.

Levels 1–4 · Year round

Wellbeing Days

Slow-paced walks, breathwork on the hill, optional waterfall dips and cold water swims, fireside food. Built for stress, burnout and busy heads. Leave lighter than you arrived.

Level 1–2 · Mixed & women-only dates

Weekend Retreats

Two nights in the Lakes or Eryri. Trails by day, good meals and better conversation by night. Solo-friendly — most people come alone the first time.

Fri–Sun · Lakes & Betws-y-Coed

Push Days

Bigger climbs, longer rounds, scrambles and trail-running intros for members ready to go further. The confidence you build here follows you home.

Level 3–4 · By progression

The name

Brighter times ahead

SOLNA takes its name from sól — the Old Norse word for sun, from the same language that named the fells, becks and tarns we walk. It stands for the moment the low sun breaks over a ridge at the end of a long day: calm in the wild. And it carries a promise — the sun always comes back. Whatever the week has been like, there are brighter times ahead, and they're easier to find outside, moving, with good people around you. That's what SOLNA is. A walk, a brew, and being part of something.

Good people. Wild places. No one walks alone here.

Founders

Forty years in the fells

SOLNA wasn't started in a boardroom. It was started on a hill, by two people who've spent their lives outdoors and watched what it does for the people they bring with them.

Jimmy, SOLNA co-founder

Jimmy

Twenty-plus years of hiking, trail running and open-water swimming across the Lakes and North Wales — all 214 Wainwrights ticked off. Firm believer that every big day out should end with hot food and a brew.

Tom, SOLNA co-founder

Tom

Twenty-plus years in the outdoors and wellbeing — walking, ultra running, cold water and helping people find their calm in wild places.

Questions

Before your first walk

Where does SOLNA run guided hikes?

Across the Lake District (Catbells, Loughrigg, Helvellyn, Scafell Pike, the Langdales), Eryri / Snowdonia (Yr Wyddfa, the Glyderau, Cadair Idris) and closer to home in the West Pennine Moors, Delamere Forest and the Clwydian Range. Most meeting points are within two hours of Manchester and Liverpool.

Why is it called SOLNA?

The Lake District's map already speaks Old Norse — fell, beck, tarn and gill all arrived with the Norse settlers a thousand years ago. Sól is the Old Norse word for sun, and SOLNA is named for the moment the low sun breaks over a ridge at the end of a walk — the exact moment on our logo. We started out as a local hiking club between mates; SOLNA is that same club, grown up. And the sun means what you'd hope: whatever's going on down in the valley, there are always brighter times to come.

I've never hiked before — can I still come?

Yes. Every walk is graded Level 1–4, and first-timers start on Level 1 and 2. Our leaders plan every route, carry full safety kit and set a pace where nobody is left behind. We'll send a kit list before your first walk — no expensive gear needed to start.

What is a wellbeing day?

A slower outdoor day combining a guided walk with breathwork, time off your phone, an optional cold water dip or waterfall plunge, and hot food. Designed for switching off, not chasing summits.

Are hikes mixed men and women?

Yes — open to everyone, typically 20s to 60s, with occasional women-only wellbeing dates. Most members come solo the first time; the group is built to make that easy.

What should I bring?

Boots or trail shoes with grip, a waterproof, a warm layer, water, lunch and a small rucksack. Full kit list on booking. SOLNA's own apparel line launches soon.

When does SOLNA clothing launch?

The first drop — wicking tees, fleeces and hoodies for men; sports bras, training tops and hoodies for women — is in development. Preview the range and join the list for first access.
